What’s your BDG?
Thursday, July 30th, 2009Hey, Candy Girls!
I recently read an interview with Pink wherein she shared a fun game she plays with her friends. It’s called BDG (short for Brag, Desire, and Gratitude), and I decided to answer it too!
Brag:
I’m taking a quick weekend sojourn to Macau with my high school buddies tomorrow. This has been one of our newer annual traditions, and I’m proud to say we’re on our third year. Last year, the adventure took us to Singapore where the four of us bravely rode the G-Max Reverse Bungee. This time around, I’m hoping to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams: to bungee jump off the Macau Tower. I’m excited and nervous but determined to do it. Wish me luck!

Desire:
I have this unquenchable desire to see my nephew Jared in the flesh. Web chats are always entertaining, but I miss seeing him do normal stuff like reading a book (his books were always fun to read), singing a song and play acting (especially when he thinks no one is watching), or brushing his teeth (he likes playing wisik-wisik and tries to gather as much water as he could in his little hands). Tickling a little boy through cyberspace is a challenge (but still doable); accepting the dandelion he adorably offers you is next to impossible (I settled with asking him to blow it away).

Gratitude:
I’m grateful to Macy for showing me this hilarious spoof of Channing Tatum and Charlyne Yi. I swear, even if you’re too young to have seen the original Dirty Dancing flick, you’ll laugh out loud at the unlikely couple’s big wigs, cheesy lines, and not-so-suave dance moves. (I swear, Michael Cera’s girlfriend is soooooo lucky. But Jenna Dewan is even luckier because she’s now married to Chan. SOB!)

I’d love to hear what your BDG is!

Passion for Fashion
Wednesday, July 29th, 2009Since I started to style for Candy and other magazines, I discovered my love for fashion. I actually have plans on studying again and take up Fashion Merchandising as my second degree. Though I’m not a full blown fashionista, I still love the thought of putting clothes together and looking at blog sites about the latest fashion trends. I like to keep my style plain, comfy, and simple but if I’m in the mood for it, I try to channel the looks I find on the WWW. Let me share you my (semi) daily fashion blog visits.
The Sartorialist
Where everything started. I love how “The Sartorialist” captured street fashion of all ages all over the globe. You’ll find the combination of clothes a little weird at first but you’ll be amazed on how they mix and match their outfits with style and without over doing it. Some of the styles are too extreme for my taste but still, they look awesome.
Chictopia
It’s a collection of personal style blogs of different people. You can find people same as your style, size, shape, and taste. You can even share tips with each other! What I love about Chictopia is you can indicate where each item on the outfit came from. Real girls can also express their personal styles online without trying too hard.
Sea of Shoes
This girl from Texas has literally a sea of shoes! The 17-year-old Jane Aldridge from Texas shares her wardrobe with her mom who’s also a shoe fanatic. All their shoes are from designer brands and super pretty. Being a shoe fanatic myself, I’d love to have a closet full of shoes just like Jane.
Just Jared
It’s actually not a fashion blog but I love looking at paparazzi pics of celebrities. May it be in their ugliest outfit, laid-back street wear or even their glam gowns during events and awards night.
Fug Yourself
Funniest “fashion blog” there is online! Celebuzz complied shots of celebs in their “fugliest” outfits. Fashion failure, extreme outfits, bold colors, or just anything that would make you say, “What was she thinking?”
Do you have any fashion blogs to share? Give me something new to visit.
<3,
Roch

Is Your Life Average?
Tuesday, July 28th, 2009They say it’s the most random, most ordinary details of our life that define who we are, and I totally agree. That’s why I love this site. It’s one of my daily reads, and I think it’s great how you can learn so much about yourself based on the entries you can relate to. This site cracks me up, makes me think, cracks me up, and mostly cracks me up. Haha! Sometimes my thoughts even end with MLIA—yes, my thoughts are that weird. And if I were to post my own entries, here are some that would make the cut:
Last weekend, I promised myself I would stay away from the mall. I ended up buying a white skirt and a pretty aqua top. I justified it by saying I deserved these things (I probably don’t) and will get to use them often (I probably won’t). MLIA
While watching Ice Age 3, I laughed out loud at a part nobody else found funny. I felt embarrassed. So I laughed again. MLIA
Last night, someone told me, “We’re shooting a video on Thursday.” I said, “Oh okay, cool. When are you shooting it?” He looked at me and said, “On Thursday.” We both pretended not to notice I wasn’t paying attention. MLIA
This morning, I woke up early and rewarded myself with a chocolate heart for breakfast. I felt bad for not making a healthier choice when I had a cupboard full of cereal bars and wanted to go back to sleep. MLIA
I wanted to take a screencap of the MyLifeIsAverage home page to accompany this blog, but I forgot how and was too lazy to ask someone or Google it. MLIA
What would your MLIA entries say?
Big average hugs,
Marla

Mia Loves Machiavelli
Monday, July 27th, 2009
My love affair with Niccolo Machiavelli started back in college, when we studied his work in one of my fave classes (Modern Political Thought, taught by Nemenzo at the time… he later on became UP’s president
). Even now, long after that class, I keep my copy of The Prince near and dear on a special shelf in my bedroom.
Which is why I’m perfectly thrilled that my latest sweet obsession goes by the same name. I first tried Machiavelli chocolates this summer, and I’ve spent the past two months craving for it. Just the other day, I was able to drop by their store (in Rustan’s Essenses—makeup and chocolate in one place, such genius!) after a work thing I attended. I was feeling accomplished so I rewarded myself with a big box. My favorite is still the Dusty Negros (the tiny ones all in one row, they have muscovado, yum!), but the Purple Yam Yum is a very close second (I promise it’s not heavy with ube, just perfectly light and sweet). Try the Negros Crunch (the plain square), Yema de Manila, and Thai Caramel (with blue flowers) too. They’re a bit pricey, but totally worth it.

Life Lessons from Dad
Friday, July 24th, 2009Hey Candy Girls!
No matter how much you deny it, your personality is formed due to your parents’ actions towards you and how they are as people.

With my huggable but sometimes infuriating parents. I love them to bits!
My dad has always been a big couch potato, happy to simply sit and watch on the sidelines. He hates the limelight and speaking in big crowds (you could just imagine how he felt when he had to give a toast for my brother’s wedding). Plus, he’d rather stay at home than see the world (he was MIA in our trips to the US and Australia). Obviously, I’m the complete opposite of all these, but I’d like to think I’ve inherited some of his great traits.
1) He loves playing games.
I’m not talking about leading women on (more on that later), but about how he enjoys playing all kinds of fun card games such as Black Jack, Poker, Pusoy, and Bingo. As kids, he taught some of us how to count through them, and we even bet real money to make it more exciting! (Don’t worry, we were just betting 25 cents back then. Haha!) When our family gets together at my aunt’s, my dad is the default Bingo ringmaster. He makes up silly things as he announces the numbers.
2) He’s up-to-date.
Sometimes, even more than I am! He’s like a walking encyclopedia when it comes to musicians and celebrities of yesteryears. And because of the amount of time he spends in front of the TV these days, he knows just about everything that’s happening in Hollywood and the local scene.
3) He’s a people person.
He’s so at ease with talking to people from any social standing, he can make friends in a snap. Our former workers and helpers called him “Boss” and I believe they said this not out of fear but respect. Recently, he’s been rekindling friendships with some of his old high school friends. I’d like to think I’ll still be in touch with my group of friends when I get to his age.
4) He likes writing letters.
When something is bothering him, he writes letters to the people involved just to clear the air and express his thoughts. One of my best buds once showed me a letter I wrote back in high school. It was about how upset I was that we were starting to drift apart. It sounded so emo when I read the letter again, but I remember feeling so relieved after writing it. I guess that’s how my dad feels too!
5) He loves only once.
Though they were set up by my older relatives (his lola and her lola were best friends, if I remember correctly), my dad knew he found the one when he met my mom. My mom wasn’t impressed, so he worked hard to change her mind. To make a long story short, they got married and ended up with four fab kids. As for me, I’m still waiting for that one big love. And I won’t stop believing it will happen. <3
Happy birthday to my dad who’s turning 60 this Saturday! I’m super excited to spend time with him and celebrate his big day. Food and fun galore!
Mimi
