Inbox Love

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
by marla

Years ago, a wise man (okay, my dad) told me that the messages saved in people’s mobile phones reflect who they are. Inspired by one of my favorite bloggers, the hilarious Sarah Brown, I’m posting ten of my favorite texts saved in my inbox. I’m not a book, but you can probably judge me based on them. (HAHA!)

“I think you’re cool ’cause you live alone and can take care of yourself… But I think your bro is cooler for liking Lego! I hope he got Lego for Christmas!” —Christmas text from my blockmate Dino

“Hey Marley! I’ve never felt how it is to have a sister, but you come pretty close.” —New Year’s text from my friend Maris. Aww!

“Stay safe. Drink lots of water and wear warm clothes. Hug!” —from my friend Chris, after I sniffled and coughed all throughout our dinner

“Haha, I’m a jologram so it’s eaziness for me.” —from Pat, our favorite photographer

“Yikes, I’m still nagpapaganda. I’m almost done though.” —from one of my prettiest friends in the world! Note that the ‘almost done’ usually means ‘will be done in around two hours.’

“Don’t drink, it will reverse your perception of what’s gwapo and what’s ngetpa.” —from my dad, while I was on an out of town trip. Seriously.

“Marla, not all bananas are the same.” —again from my friend Chris. Don’t ask.

“Pa-cheesburger ka naman!” —from art director Steph. My phone can read messages out loud in a funny accent, so she sent this to me.

“Eto na, table for one. Tear rolling down my face. Trembling lower lip.” —again from Pat, when he missed lunch with the Candy girls and had to eat alone

“Good work, girl!” —from my mom. Haha!

Compiling these messages is a great stress-reliever. It makes you laugh, makes you reminisce, and ultimately reminds you of how many people love you. You should try it!

What’s in YOUR inbox? :)

Big hugs,
Marla

Summer Blockbusters

Friday, March 20th, 2009
by mimi

I can’t wait for the summer months to come! As a kid, I escaped the heat by taking fast rides on my bicycle, eating ice cream pints (to share) on top of our village’s giant slide, and turning on the A/C (full blast!) while having movie marathons. This year, I’m looking forward to spending the weekends at the theaters to catch these upcoming flicks.

Hotel for Dogs (April 22)
I’m a sucker for flicks with cute animals in it, and this one seems especially adorable because of its plot! Two siblings (Emma Roberts and Wizards of Waverly Place‘s Jake T. Austin) are on a mission to save the stray dogs in the city. Quirky Lisa Kudrow is also in it, so I think there’ll be tons of LOL moments!

X-Men Origins (May 1)
You all know about Wolverine from the X-Men trilogy, but do you know how he ended up with healing powers? This movie reveals Wolvie’s dark past, but the real reason why I want to watch it is because of one particular guy: card-throwing Gambit (played by Taylor Kitsch). I’ve always loved this character from the X-Men comic books, especially when they paired him up with Rogue. Their chemistry was literally explosive. Haha!

Star Trek (May 8)
I’m not a hardcore fan, but I’ve seen episodes of the old TV shows. When I found out that J.J. Abrams (of Alias and LOST fame) was directing it, I knew I had to see it. Believe it or not, I got multiple goose bumps just by watching the trailer! I can’t wait to see my favorite Heroes bad guy Zachary Quinto play the half-Vulcan/half-human Spock.

Angels & Demons (May 13)
Steph, Mia, and I like watching CSI shows because we like to solve mysteries. This one is no different! I love the fact that it’s set in Rome (meaning I’ll get to see its beautiful sights without spending a ginormous amount of cash!).

Terminator Salvation (May 22)
I love the mythology of the Terminator flicks and was completely obsessed with Edward Furlong (who played the teenage John Connor) when the second installment came out. I like how the future John sends his friend Kyle Reese to the past to save him from the Terminator (a robot from the future who was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), but then he never finds out that Kyle actually falls in love with his young mother Sarah and IS his father. (Mind-blowing premise, huh?) Now, hottie Christian Bale stars as an older, grittier John who is fated to lead the human resistance against the robots. Will he succeed? I hope so!

500 Days of Summer
Though this doesn’t seem like it’s coming out soon, I had to include it because I fell in love with the trailer and its song (The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition”) after Macy showed it to us. Watch it here then listen to the song here. The actors (Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel) look cute together and the story seems really amaaaaazing.

Speaking of amazing stories, our über-talented Assistant Lifestyle Editor Marla Miniano is publishing the last installment of her awesome books called Every Girl’s Guide to Flings. If you have questions about it or the first two books, why don’t you head on over to Candy ChitChat on March 25 (Wednesday), 7 pm, and ask your questions? She’s excited to chat with you girls online!

Looking forward to dreamy summer days,
Mimi :butterfly:

Angel’s Weekend Highs

Thursday, March 19th, 2009
by angel

1. Reuniting with Sagada. I was just in Sagada last June, but when a friend invited me to go on a retreat there this month, I couldn’t resist. There’s just something about Sagada that makes the 14-hour journey from Manila worth it. Stopping at the Banaue Rice Terraces is one of them!

2. Celebrating the mass in the midst of God’s creation.

Gathered in prayer at the peak of Echo Valley

Thankful for our blessings at Kiltepan Viewpoint

3. Eating giant siomai—it’s twice as big and twice as good as the ones in Manila!

4. Walking along rice paddies.

5. Breathtaking views.

6. A picnic at the foot of Mt. Ampacao.

7. Flowers on the trail.

8. Jumping for joy.

9. Having a healthy meal at Oh My Gulay!

10. Celebrating birthdays.

The fudgiest, yummiest chocolate cake baked by Sagada’s resident French chef for my friend Char’s birthday. (My mouth is watering just thinking about it!)

What are you looking forward to this weekend, Candy girls? Hope you’ll get an all-natural high! :star:

Love,
Angel O:)

What I Miss About School

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009
by roch

It’s been 3 years since I finished school. After graduating, I said to myself that I’m never going back to school again. Late night thesis writing, defense, exams to study for, projects and home works, and all those nerve-wracking moments in school. But whenever I look back, I’d begin to realize that those chaotic years were actually the best years of my life. As I reminisce on the wackiest times of my “studying” life, let me share you the reasons why I miss high school and college.

1. Our long-ass canteen in CSA. It was said to be the longest canteen in Asia. It’s actually as long as 7 basketball courts combined! There were a variety of stalls to choose from. I remember eating my lunch food during recess and eat merienda during lunch breaks. Our recess lasts for only 15 minutes so just imagine how fast I eat (subtract walking and buying time to the 15 minutes, do the math d:) I specifically miss the grilled tuna with java rice. YUM!

2. Our tambayan during high school. We call it “the batcave”.

3. ALLOWANCE!!! Nothing beats the money given by your parents. Woot!

4. The thought of not worrying about life at all. You just enjoy, worry about your crush, what movie to watch for the weekend, and your exams. Nothing that serious yet.

5. Having long breaks during college. We love to watch movies and go on a food trip during our 5-hour break. Yes, 5 HOURS! We have so much time to kill.

6. Goofing around with my college blockmates. They’re the craziest bunch of people I’ve known. Speaking of, we recently met up for a reunion and it was crazy! Seeing them again and reminisce about the good times brought me back to college.

7. Taking down notes. I don’t really like my handwriting but I’m OC when it comes to note taking. I like my notes to be clean and understandable. In that way, it will make studying a lot easier.

the last but definitely not the least…

8. HAVING A SUMMER VACATION!!!!! ‘Nuff said. :P

How about you? Since school is (almost) over, what will you miss about school?

In need of a vacation,
Roch <3

On Mia’s Radar Now

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009
by mia

Here’s what’s on my radar right this minute!

The cutesy soaps from The Soap Factory are amazing! I especially love the donut ones—they look good enough to eat!

Burger lovers like me will love the idea of taking burger dining to a fancier level at Murray and D’Vine at Serendra. Try their slammers sampler and their criss-cut fries. Yum!

The writers of The Nanny Diaries (the book was interesting enough, liked the movie too) have their new book out and I’m thinking of buying it… have you read it? Let me know if it’s any good!

I love hitting this day spa for a quick de-stresser. And I love even more that they opened a new outlet in Eastwood’s new mall—it means I can take my dogs for a walk and head in for some primping too! :)
