Let the Sunshine In
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009Dear Summer,
Since I started working, I sort of fell out of love with you. I used to look forward to your arrival, because it meant I could take a break from schoolwork and spend time at home with my beloved books. But now that I am no longer entitled to a two-month vacation every year, I find that I just can’t bring myself to be excited about you anymore. But please don’t take it personally—it’s not you, it’s me. I don’t like the heat at all, and I’ve never been a big fan of the beach (the saltwater hurts my eyes, and getting sand all over my stuff annoys me). I’d rather be snoozing peacefully in my room than sweating it out under than sun. Sure, I love floral dresses and pretty sandals, but I live in a tropical country, which means I can wear those anytime I want anyway.
But this year seems different. I think you are trying to prove to me that you are still worth giving a chance, because you are throwing blessings my way, and the next two months promise to be packed. You seem to understand that being busy keeps me happy, and you are making an effort to fill up my calendar with Good Things. As of this moment, I already have plans to spend a week with my favorite baby boy, a weekend in Cebu with some of my best friends, and maybe another weekend with the Candy team. I will also be spending two days a week teaching a summer reading program, and possibly another two days volunteering for a cause I truly believe in.
Oh, and yeah, there’s this little event in May, too:
(OMG!!! I seriously wanted to cry tears of joy when I saw this.)
So thank you in advance, Summer. Looks like you might win me over this time.
Big hugs,
Marla

Mia’s Long Weekend
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009I know the long weekend isn’t till this coming weekend, but it certainly feels I just had one. I took a couple of days off to spend time with my sis who was in town, plus I somehow ended up with a lot of other things as well. Want to see?

The Dessert Showdown
My family had a party with my guy’s family, and we both brought dessert. Their Mango Bravo from Conti’s wins Tallest Treat hands down, while our Blueberry Cheesecake Cups (Web Editor Macy made them!) take the cake for Most Satisfaction Per Square Inch. My photos don’t do either dessert justice (for starters, I didn’t even get a chance to shoot the cheesecake WITH the blueberry topping), but in my defense, I did have the shortest window between the time it was okay to take them out of the fridge and the time people descended on the treats!

Candy For Sale
Hit the bookstore with my sis and mom, and they delightedly pointed out this special Candy display. Isn’t it pretty?
We Heart Craig David
I’m a big fan, and when Managing Ed Mimi told me ages ago he was coming, I was super excited. Was stressing a couple of days before the concert because I still didn’t have tickets, so I was beyond thrilled when my guy told me he got for us! Bumped into Features Ed Angel and her guy at the concert (they were so game—dancing, singing, taking videos!)—she’s a fan too!

My Puppy Trauma
Had to rush my dogs to the vet because aside from their regular shots, I needed the vet to check my dog Mick’s (aka Mickeyangelo) eye. He and Bugsy get so rough when they playfight that I usually hear Mick give a little yelp at one point. This time, when I checked, I saw a blood clot in his eye
It must’ve been painful for him, but I think it hurt me (Protective Dog Momma) more
The vet said it was a good thing Bugsy didn’t hit the center of Mick’s eye or else it would’ve had more serious consequences. Whew!

My 1st Workout in Ages
I’m a dedicated couch potato (e.g. I try with all my might to catch all the CSI reruns every day of every week, and I will watch with gusto episodes of old shows like Sex and the City when I catch them on TV… even though I have the complete set of videos in my room). So it was quite possibly the biggest shocker of 2009 when I switched off the TV and donned my workout clothes and worked up a sweat in order to get fit. My guy claims my pink cross-trainers were aghast that they were pulled out of hibernation from my closet (they were last seen in public in….Jan of 2008)!

I Heart Martha Stewart Weddings
In between a couple more dinner parties over the weekend, I dropped by the MSW Bridal Fair to visit my friend Tata, MSW’s Ed in Chief. The setup was so elegant and the displays were so pretty, I couldn’t wait to have my own wedding! Here’s one I liked in particular:

How about you, how’s your summer vacay so far? Would love to hear all about it!

Ice Cream Dreams (Part 1)
Friday, March 27th, 2009Hey, Candy Girls and Guys!
The lazy days of summer have just begun… are you bored out of your pants yet? The sweltering heat getting you down? I have the perfect solution—DAIRY QUEEN ICE CREAM!
This afternoon, Macy and I got a chance to try their new summer flavors.
For the sweet strawberry fans, have a taste of the Strawberry Colada, a premium fruit smoothie with a refreshing blend of whole strawberries, coconut milk and Dairy Queen’s signature soft serve ice cream. It will transport you straight to those sandy beaches you’ve been dreaming about all school year!
For those who are die-hard Blizzard loyalists, try the new Tropical Delights: The Mango Pleasure (mango and toasted coconut flakes blended with ice cream) and the Almond Pleasure (a mix of almonds, rich chocolate chunks, toasted coconut flakes, and creamy coconut milk blended with ice cream). Macy and I personally loved the Almond Pleasure Blizz!
To balance out the sweetness (trust me, you WILL need something salty before or after eating all that ice cream), have Dairy Queen’s yummy hotdog sandwich. You can choose between different toppings (three cheese, chili melt, pepperoni and mozarella, or relish)!
Or you can have Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Roll Up. (Taco Bell is right beside DQ!)
Now that’s what I call a balanced meal! >:)
So head on over to Gateway Mall, Araneta Center (or any mall near you) to get your summer ice cream fix at Dairy Queen!
Sugar High,
Angel

After seeing Jim Carrey’s hilarious Yes Man a couple of months back, I’ve come to realize that I should be more like his highly-improved character, bursting with life and oozing with optimism! With that, I’m saying YES to three things:

Yes to supporting good causes.
MTV and The Body Shop are currently raising funds to support the Staying Alive Foundation. When you buy a Limited Edition Tantalising Lip Butter, all the proceeds will support the music channel’s global education campaign that’ll teach millions of young people about HIV and AIDS. I want to buy this deelish-sounding lippie and know that I contributed to something worthwhile.

Yes to conquering my fear.
I finally tried surfing after much prodding from the Candy staff. I kept sliding and falling off my board, but I felt jubilant when I finally got to stand tall! I was stoked for days, and I can’t wait to try it again. Learn about surfing in Club Manila East and keep checking CandyTV for our awesome surfing story!

Yes to letting go.
My younger brother Aaron always bashes me for hanging on to gadgets/computers until they die a slow death. My iPod Photo is no exception! When its click wheel officially retired (I can’t control the sound and choose tracks so it has become a giant iShuffle of sorts), I was forced to look around for a new player. With the help of my brother and sister in Australia (thank you Men and Kai!), I’m getting a brand new/way cheap iPod Classic by the end of this week. Yahoo!!! Don’t laugh, but I want to name her Astrogirl just because she looks so spacey.

What about you? What will you say YES to this summer?
Mimi :apple:
