Mush Fest

by mimi

Forgive me for writing a mushy post. I just watched Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging last night and I suddenly wanted to whip out my old diaries and experience the thrills and pains of puppy love. This brilliant Brit movie also brought about my desire to re-watch my top 5 rom-com teen flicks. (New flicks Angus and Nick & Norah have definitely made my top 10!) Have you seen all of these already?

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
I love this movie so much that I apparently have three different copies of it in VHS, VCD, and a collector’s edition DVD. Haha! It’s about a tomboy drummer (Watts) who digs her artist friend (Keith) who’s obsessed with the popular girl. Favorite scene by far is when Watts teaches Keith how to kiss. Sparks literally fly off their skins, I swear! (FYI: In case the title sounds familiar, Gossip Girl loosely based their season 2 episode 1 title on this particular title.)

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Undoubtedly the movie that launched Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger’s careers! Their cat-and-dog antics are just hilarious to watch. Heath singing “Can’t Take My Eyes of You” was a stellar moment, while Julia’s emotional breakdown while reading her poem was so raw. The lines are:

I hate the way you talk to me,
and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car.
I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots,
and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme.
I hate it, I hate the way you’re always right.
I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you.
Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

Aww!!! I like the fact that the other characters are so cute to watch, the story is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, and the bands in the flick are fantastic. Give the soundtrack a spin.

Never Been Kissed (1999)
I love this movie because: 1) it introduced me to Adélie penguins who are said to spend their whole lives looking for their one true mate, 2) Michael Vartan (who plays the cutest, most unassuming teacher ever), and 3) it describes the perfect kiss to perfection: “That thing, that moment, when you kiss someone and everything around becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person and you realize that that person is the only person that you’re supposed to kiss for the rest of your life, and for one moment you get this amazing gift and you want to laugh and you want to cry because you feel so lucky that you found it and so scared that that it will go away all at the same time.” (Yet again, Gossip Girl loosely based the season 2 episode 3 title on this movie’s title.)

Freaky Friday (2003)
I admit the reason I watched this was because of Chad Michael Murray (we had a thing once, haha!), but I found myself immensely entertained by the plot and the chemistry of the cast, even between mom Jamie Lee Curtis and Chad. A LOL moment was when Chad crooned “…Baby One More Time” completely out of tune. Sad to say, I think he really doesn’t know how to sing.

She’s the Man (2006)
Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, this film showcases Amanda Bynes’s amazing talent. She has the best comedic timing, the wackiest facial expressions, and the funniest sounding “guy” voice. Sometimes I wish she and Channing Tatum were a real-life couple because they look so cute together, but since I know it won’t happen anytime soon (Chan and Jenna Dewan are engaged), I’ll just settle for replaying scenes of them panicking over a spider, practicing soccer moves together, and smooching at the carnival kissing booth.

Still feeling the love,
Mimi

Going Bare

Thursday, February 19th, 2009
by angel

What was your biggest insecurity in high school?

I’m sure everyone has a secret insecurity. Even if she seems like the most popular girl in school, or the smartest, or the most put-together, that person is hiding a dreaded thought or feeling. It’s a natural part of growing up.

That’s why it helps to go bare! Hold on, I don’t mean naked—I meant to strip yourself of your insecurities and self-doubt and let the real you shine through… just like these characters from Ateneo Blue Repertory’s BARE, a rock musical about two gay teenagers struggling to find their place in the world as they are about to graduate from a Catholic high school.

Jason is the class golden boy. He’s popular, athletic, smart—everyone thinks he’s Mr. Perfect. But what they don’t know is that he’s in a secret relationship with his shy classmate, Peter. Things get even more complicated when popluar girl Ivy starts pursuing him!

Though you’re not gay, you’ll surely be able to relate with this play. (Hey, that rhymes!) You’ll see teens struggle through their insecurities, such as one girl who is insecure about feeling fat and who is always compared to her brother, and another guy who feels like he’s always number 2 and never number 1. Will they overcome these in the end? What will happen to Jason and Peter? Will everyone find out about their secret? I’m intrigued!

So for a dose of rock music and and a different take on high school life, catch BARE, from February 17 to 28, 2009. Showtimes are every 8:00 pm at the Fine Arts Exhibit Hall, 3/F Gonzaga Building, Ateneo De Manila University. Tickets are priced at Php 200 each, and those interested may contact Alexa Yupangco at 0917-7220805. For more details, visit BareManila.multiply.com.

Angel O:)

P.S. If you’re not doing anything this weekend, catch Stages of Love (it’s at the same venue as Bare). Last show is this Saturday at 12 noon, 2 pm and 5 pm. I watched it with my guy last Valentine’s and we super enjoyed it. It’s for the romantic, the cynic, the lovestruck, the pessimist, and the optimist in you! :)

When faced with that typical slambook question, “Define love,” how would you answer?

My theory is this: Love can be viewed from various angles. It’s like when you’re standing on a viewing deck and marveling over the sights, not knowing that the person on the opposite end might be seeing something completely different. And although I believe love can never be fully defined (yes, that’s my definition, that love has no definition, ’cause I’m pilosopo like that), I thought it would be cool to compare how different people with different perspectives try to capture something as complex as love in a sentence, a paragraph, or a stanza.

Here are my favorite love quotes—some are pretty straightforward, some are a bit more creative, and some are simply hilarious. But all of them capture at least a single aspect of that little thing that makes the world go round.

“I am thinking it’s a sign/ that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images and/ when we kiss they’re perfectly aligned/ And I have to speculate that God himself did make us/ into corresponding shapes/ like puzzle pieces from the clay.” —Ben Gibbard, musician

“I wish I was your favorite girl/ I wish you though I was the reason you were in the world/ I wish my smile was your favorite kind of smile/ I wish the way I dressed was your favorite kind of style/ I wish you couldn’t figure me out/ But you’d always wanna know what I was about/ I wish you’d hold my hand when I was upset/ I wish you’d never forget the look on my face when we first met.” —Kate Nash, singer-songwriter

“I used to think…that all relationships need the kind of violent shove that a crush brings, just to get you started and to push you over the humps. And then, when the energy from that shove has gone and you come to something approaching a halt, you have to look around and see what you’ve got. It could be something completely different, it could be something roughly the same, but gentler and calmer, or it could be nothing at all.” —Nick Hornby, novelist

“But I love you, in a really, really big pretend-to-like-your-taste-in-music, let-you-eat-
the-last-piece-of-cheesecake, hold-a-radio-over-my-head-outside-your-window, unfortunate way that makes me hate you, love you.” —Meredith Grey, doctor

“It should be magical. There should be music playing and romantic lighting and a subtle build-up… There should be a thousand yellow daisies and candles and a horse and I don’t know what the horse is doing there unless you’re riding it, which seems a little over the top, but it should be more than this.” —Lorelai Gilmore, mother

“I dunno what to tell you, Marge! I don’t think about things. I mean, I respect those who do, but I just try and make the day not hurt until I can crawl back in with you.” —Homer Simpson, husband

“I just want to be with her. All the time. I want to hear about her day, and tell her about mine. I want to hold her hand, and smell her hair…but I don’t want to be her stupid boyfriend!” —Barney Stinson, King of Awesome

So. How would YOU define love, Candy Girls? :)

Big hugs,
Marla

Mia Loves Valentine’s!

Monday, February 16th, 2009
by mia

Okay, okay, I admit—liking something as cheesy as Valentine’s does make me cheesy by association. But if it means I get to have a special weekend with my favorite people, then I’m all for it! Here’s what had me smiling all weekend long:

1. Arriving at my desk on Friday, and spotting a big bouquet of red roses. At first I thought it was part of a press kit, but then I saw a note peeking out, with my guy’s handwriting. I laughed out loud at his sweet joke in the note and rushed to the Candy editors to share. I was wondering how he got it there since as far as I knew, he was at work the night before and had a 7am work thing Friday. And then I opened my e-mail and saw a photo of him at my desk, with the flowers, taken at midnight!

2. Stopping by the pantry to grab some Prawn Fries offered by the Candy editors. The chips were extra crackly that day!

3. Getting all gussied up for a date with my guy. My bro and I had to run an errand after work, and cutting and arranging my roses as soon as I got home (am so glad they didn’t wilt! the poor babies were out of water for so long!) left me with barely enough time to get ready. So I relied on my no-fail favorites to see me through.

The ring: I’m no genius when it comes to accessorizing, so I love that this ring brightens any outfit in a flash.

The shoe: My bright blue suede pumps are actually comfy! And yes, that’s my mom’s dog Bugsy (a.k.a. Buggy Bear, Bugsy Boo Boo, Bugatello, Dungis, Tabachuy), refusing to get out of the picture, even after much prodding.

The blush: Benefit’s Dandelion leaves the softest pink glow on my cheeks. It was a surprise treat from my sis Celine!

4. Having dinner at an old favorite resto and reminiscing. We headed to The Chocolate Kiss Cafe, much to my delight. I remember back in college, no matter what kind of day I’d had, I’d go home in a good mood if I had had lunch that day at The Kiss.

5. Taking Mickey and Bugsy for a Saturday walk with my guy, and playing “Steal The Toy” afterwards. Mick (a.k.a. Mickeyangelo) loooves toys, and his current favorite is this elephant squeak toy from my sis Bambi.

6. Catching the Audrey Hepburn Film Festival. I love Audrey’s style and beauty because she has so much character. She’s so different from cookie-cutter pretty girls. I love her Givenchy outfits and handsome leading men too (Gregory and Cary are my faves)!

7. A Sunday night sushi party with my fam at my bro’s place. It’s my niece’s birthday, and they always serve the most amazing food! And when it was time to head home, my niece gave out heart-shaped chocolate donuts in heart-print boxes. Yum!
