Facing Fears
Friday, October 31st, 2008Hi Candy girls!
Since we’re celebrating Halloween today, I figured it would be brave of me to post about my biggest fears. Some are silly worries, while the others are downright serious. Well, for me at least!
1) Flying cockroaches. I’m not the type of girl who’d instantly freak out when she sees a little cockroach walking about. In fact, I’m the type who’d get a flip-flop, squish it, then move on. But when it comes to flying creepy crawlies, I totally freak out like a teen who squeals when she sees her favorite boyband. And not in a good way.
2) A truckload of ants. I just came across this the other day when Angel opened her lunch box and found her rice contaminated with ants. I seriously got the heebie-jeebies (is this how you spell it?) because it reminded me of a time when I was younger. Red ants went to my towels in my closet, and I ended up using one after a bath. You could guess what happened next… I was covered with ant bites while doing the naked “get-these-ants-off-me” dance. Annoying, painful, and embarrassing all at the same time.
3) Sharks. I made the mistake of watching Open Water one boring night. I really got scared when I saw the shot of the couple swimming above, then about 10 sharks clamoring to get their jaws on them below sea level. It was creepy because the sharks managed to look like eels slithering about. Gross! I seriously didn’t get to sleep well for days. To overcome this fear, I swam with baby sharks in Batangas as well as with gentle whale sharks in Bicol. Hehe!
4) Seeing ghosts. I’ve never actually seen one, but after my friend died, I went to her wake and experienced a strange feeling. The left half of my body was freezing cold, while the right half was burning hot. I could feel a presence, and another friend I was with (whose third eye was open) felt the same thing. She said it was our friend “making paramdam.†It freaked me out at first, but eventually, I got over it.
5) Dying. I’ll admit I’ve always wanted to die young (like maybe at 50), but after seeing my parents successfully live past that age, I’ve changed my mind. I don’t want to die a slow death on a hospital bed, but on the flip side, I don’t want to suddenly die without letting people know I love them. Most importantly, I don’t want to die without having served my purpose—whatever that is.
What about you? What are you greatest fears? How do you get over them?
Oh! While we’re still on the topic of facing fears, do you know that ABS-CBN is coming out with a show called Fear Factor? It’s adapted from a popular American game show which will feature one of our resident Candy Cuties: Jose Sarasola! Be sure to catch the show beginning November 10 at 9 pm and root for Jose.
I know I will!
Excited to go trick or treating this afternoon,
Mimi

Happy Halloween!
Thursday, October 30th, 2008It’s the night of frights and the evening of ghouls… are you ready to be scared silly and get dressed in the best costumes?
Last Saturday, my family had an early Halloween party to celebrate the birthdays of everyone born in October. Though we didn’t exactly dress in scary costumes, we did come up with an interesting assortment of characters!
Ugly Angel: Yep, that’s me, dressed as Ugly Betty. My sister Liza ordered the poncho online and had it shipped all the way from the States so she could use it as her costume for her grad pic. Since she already cut her hair, she let me use it for the night!

Lomographics
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008It’s been a year since Team Manila welcomed Lomography and opened the very first Lomographic Embassy in Manila. To celebrate, they invited lomographers, artists, and writers to collaborate on an exhibition experiment.
In three days, they were asked to do three different things for three days and come up with their own masterpiece. The result is what you can call a “happy accident” or surprisingly captivating works of art. These can be viewed at the Team Manila office in 146B Jupiter Avenue, Makati City. They will also be touring the exhibit to Pablo in Cubao Expo, Greenbelt 5, Gallery 7 San Juan, and Rockwell.

Never Say Die
Friday, October 24th, 2008I’ve always been in love with water sports. When I was still in high school, I was a member of our school’s swimming varsity team and we would compete with different schools. My teammates and I would always play water polo every after practice. I’ve always wanted to try all kinds of water sports but I just don’t have the time to do so. It’s like I was born for the water. When my high school friends invited me to go wakeboarding, I didn’t hesitate to say ‘yes’.
My college friends used to go wakeboarding every weekend. They would tell about their ride and how thrilling it is. I didn’t have plans of trying it before. I was thinking it was just a fad since everyone was doing it. But then again, I thought, we’ll only live once. Why not try it out?
We left a little before lunch for Lago De Oro, a water skiing park located in Calatagan, Batangas. When we got there, the time and weather was perfect for an afternoon of wakeboarding. For starters, one of the instructors taught us the proper position for the kneeboard. It will be the first thing you should learn before wakeboarding to get the feel of the force coming from the cables.
I was feeling a bit nervous before I started because I didn’t know what to expect. When one of my friends zoomed to the water for his first attempt, I thought it wasn’t that hard at all. Then my turn came…
