Food Fest

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008
by marla

Last Thursday, Mimi and I headed to C3 Events Place in Greenhills to experience their scrumptious Contemporary Filipino Cocktail buffet. We were greeted by a mouth-watering variety of re-invented local fare, and we were so excited to dig in! We had a tactic—divide and conquer—so she lined up for the savory dishes while I made my way towards the dessert table. Our favorites were the Crab Fat and Truffle Oil with Crispy Anchovy Pasta; Puttanesca of Green Mango, Shrimp Paste and Pork Bagnet; Salted Duck Egg, Century Egg, Chives and Soy Glaze Salad; and Crispy Kare-Kare. Unfortunately, we don’t have nice photos of these because we were too “busy.” Haha!

Check out that awesome dessert spread! To showcase how much yummy stuff you can make from our national fruit, everything was mango-flavored. We loved the Mango and Coffee Tiramisu; Mango and White Chocolate Mousse; and Mango and Lavender Yam Polvoron. But what really had us raving (and coming back for seconds) was an old favorite, the Bibingka Souffle: It has the consistency of Brazo de Mercedes, but with salted egg, cheese, and a warm coconut custard cream that you pour all over. You can try out this heavenly creation at C2 Classic Cuisine (they have branches in Power Plant Mall and Shangri-La Plaza). It’s very, very addictive—don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Any restos you’ve discovered lately? We’d love to hear about your fave food finds! :)

Big hugs,
Marla :penguin:

Mia’s Baby Weekend

Monday, September 22nd, 2008
by mia

I’ve been a big couch potato for the past couple of months, getting more than my fair share of TV while my Dad was on vacay (I don’t have a TV in my room but I love watching TV in my Dad’s room). So when I had quite a busy bee weekend just this weekend, it was pretty refreshing.

Last Friday night, the Candy team got together with some of our friends at The Ice Cream Bar for a surprise birthday party for Mimi. We had tons of fun (and dessert!) both there and even before the party, pretending whenever Mimi was around that we had absolutely nothing planned and wouldn’t be seeing her till Monday! The hardest part for me was saying bye to her Friday night and not making her beso as an “advanced happy birthday” thing! And one of the highlights of my night was seeing Ines (former Candy Ed in Chief and my former boss!) and meeting her new baby! Ines had such a pretty Mommy glow that had nothing to do whatsoever with makeup. Plus her hubby Marc was such a natural with the baby that I got kilig imagining my turn when I’m a married mom myself!

The next day, I was busy with my own babies—Mickey and Bugsy! I had to bring them to the vet for their shots, plus make sure Candy’s final proofs and October cover get to the printers on time. Check out my fur kids, squiggling on the vet’s examination table, pushing each other towards the wall, trying to get as far away as possible from the vet!

And take a look at this fat baby Labrador in the pet store next door. I was dying to squish his fat tummy!

And lastly, meet my niece Gabriela’s new baby—a black Havanese pup named Maya! She’s a good girl but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a naughty side! Here she is with Rora, Gab’s sister. :)

Going Undercover

Friday, September 19th, 2008
by angel

Back in high school and college, during Christmas exchange gifts, my friends would tease me because I’d always ask my “mommy” for new undies. I just love having underwear with cute designs and unique prints (even if no one else will see them but me)! That’s why when a girl friend has a birthday, the first thing I’d think of to give them would also be—you guessed it—undies! :))

When I found out Penshoppe came out with a new underwear line, I got excited to buy some. The designs are really cute and super affordable too! :)

Here I am with Roch in Warehouse 135 for the launch of Undercover.

At the launch, we saw Penshoppe models who’ve been featured in Candy, such as Melissa Ricks, Vicky Hererra, Victor Basa, Einar Ingebrigtsen, and Dawn Balagot. But the real star of the show was up and coming Brazilian-Japanese model, Akihiro Sato. Roch and I were so kilig because we were able to take a video of him for candymag.com and have our pictures taken with him!

After a video was shown presenting the new Undercover line, we played a game where we had to answer some questions. Guess what? Team Candy won! As our prize, Roch and I got lomo cameras and an exclusive photo shoot with Akihiro. We were ecstatic!

With my new Holga. I’m naming it Hiro! Haha!

As for the real Akihiro, you’ll have to wait for the feature in the magazine. Any ideas on what we can do at the photo shoot? What questions do you want to ask him? Let me know!

Your Undercover agent,
Angel O:)

My Liner Notes

Thursday, September 18th, 2008
by mimi

I had grand plans of writing about 30 people who have shaped my life. I planned on writing something about someone special each night beginning a month from my actual birthday. However, I was only able to write a few entries before getting sidetracked by exhaustion, night-outs, and TV viewing.

Since it seems I’ll never be able to force that long entry out of my system (and my self-imposed deadline is due on Saturday), I’ve decided to come up with this quick list instead. I’m not putting any elaborate reasons. These people don’t even have to know I’m thanking them. I just feel that I need to do this for my peace of mind. You know how CD sleeves have “thank you” notes on them? That’s what this is. But instead of thanking people for helping me whip up a mean CD, I’m thanking them for being instrumental in my life!

Thank you Mom, Dad, Kato, Men, A, Jared, Angkong, Ako, Ebet, Eky, Graziella, Karen, Blanche, Weng, Kaye, Leyds, Marc, Eve, Carolyn, Miren, Lisa, Noelle, Chinggay, Ines, Koko, TJ, Jo, Maan, Fat, Tin.

Aside from these people mentioned above, I want to show my gratitude to my various barkadas, orgs, and the entire Candy team (this includes the past and current staff, all the COC members, and even you. Yes, YOU!) for always, always making me feel loved. It’s an honor working for unique young spirits with a way talented, fabulous crew. Here’s hoping we’ll spend more happy years together!

Can’t thank everyone enough,
Mimi :*

Reunited and It Feels So Good

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008
by macy

It’s been eight (yikes) years since my high school grad. Most of the people I still get to see often are my kabarkadas. As for my other batchmates, I haven’t seen most of them since graduation! Some have moved to other countries and some I have lost touch with. Thank goodness for the Internet.

So last Saturday, it was a treat to see my batchmates again (we were only 29, 30 counting the one on the phone haha). Someone said that we still looked the same. There were some who were married and some who already have kids. We were kidding that in our next get together, everyone should have babies already. Haha!

Being surrounded by my batchmates made me reminisce about our high school days. It’s so much fun to look back, because those four years were really some of the best years of my life. :)
