Child Performers

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
by macy

As a child, I grew up being made to perform in front of my parents’ friends and our relatives. At four years old, my mom dressed me up in this frilly dress and made me learn how to dance to Lambada. Hahaha! Imagine a tiny girl swinging her hips to a song she doesn’t even understand. When I learned how to memorize songs, my mom bought me a multiplex (!!!) of One Moment In Time and that became my performance piece for family gatherings (I think I still have the tape at home. Haha!). When I grew older, I took piano lessons and tried to perform for parties at home (my brother was much better than I was, though.). I still try to play sometimes, but I haven’t had much time.

So, it’s no surprise that I get thrilled when I watch kids perform. There’s this different energy about them. You don’t see them getting frazzled or over-thinking themselves. They just take the stage and make it seem like play time.

I’m sharing two precious videos of kids performing. I love that both are ten-year-olds, but are singing jazz standards. Haha!

Don’t Drink and Drive!

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
by marla

Hi, Candy Girls! Last Friday, Roch, Macy, and I headed to The Fort Open Grounds for the FORD I Don’t Drink and Drive Summit. We missed the road safety quiz bee participated in by high school and college students, but we were just in time for the concert featuring OPM acts Silent Sanctuary, Rivermaya, Barbie Almalbis, and Up Dharma Down, among others. There were also trivia games for the guests and empowering speeches from celebrity advocates like Alex Compton and Brent Javier. They talked about common misconceptions about alcohol and the dangerous effects of alcohol on drivers. After a night of fun and music, I think the point was successfully driven home—that driving is a huge responsibility, not just to yourself, but to everyone else on the road as well. I hope you keep this in mind when you go on your out-of-town trips and weekend parties this summer, Candy Girls. Stay safe, everyone!

8-}

PS: Margaux’s friends threw an awesome Harajuku-themed surprise party for her last Saturday—and we all had a blast, as you can see in this photo. Like our outfits?!

Big hugs,
Marla :penguin:

New Girls in Town :)

A few months ago, we saw this ad calling for friends to send in their stories of Sisterhood and Skin Care. You might have heard of it – Clean and Clear Sisters in Ink? Immediately, we called each other up and decided that we would send in our own story. We never thought we’d win – we were settling for the second place. So imagine our surprise when we woke up one morning and discovered that we did it, we won! We were going to be Candy interns for fifteen whole days!

Who are we, anyway?

We are Jenny and Amanda. We’ve been friends for as long as we can remember, and working for Candyhas been our dream ever since. We’re happy to say that working for Candy was more fun than we ever imagined.

Here’s a little taste of the fun we’ve been having so far:

Practicum Paradise!

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Hi, fellow Candy girls! Micah here from the Council of Cool 8 – ah, but this isn’t a post about Council duties. I’m going to rave about my first week as a Candy intern! =D Yep, and it’s really been a blast! Even though I only report in the afternoons (I’ve got class in the morning, ugh!), I surely don’t miss out on the work fun!

Here’s how my week looked like:
Monday – There wasn’t much to do because all the staff computers were away for maintenance, so I wiped and sorted stuff to be moved (soon!) to the new Candy HQ.
Tuesday – Ate Angel and Ate Marla brought me along on a situation shoot – that means we shot those photos that accompany articles.
Wednesday – I got to sit in at the staff’s editorial meeting, where they brainstorm and decide on the articles that will come out in the next issue we’re preparing. I also got to meet Amanda and Jenny, the gal pals who won the Clean and Clear contest and are now interning at Candy for 15 days as their prize!
Thursday – Amanda, Jenny and I assisted Ate Margaux in a fashion shoot, and Ate Macy and Ate Roch in a simultaneous Candymag.com shoot. It was a pretty long day, but it was fun!
Today, Friday – I tagged along with Ate Marla and Ate Macy on a Candy Bites shoot. Let’s just say it was a tasty experience! Oh, and guess what – Miggy Chavez was sitting right beside me half an hour ago! (Cue your jealous squeals! Haha!) Finally, the monthly Council meeting is in, let’s see, 30 minutes! Whew, what a fab Friday!

Want to know other things I love about interning with Candy?

Slambook Fever

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
by mimi

I’m feeling restless, but the good kind. The type you feel moments before you perform in front of a big crowd or just before you bump into your crush. Now why am I feeling this way? One reason: Gossip Girl!

If you’ve been living under a rock (or maybe just not a fan of the show? But that’s impossible!), you must know that the show is coming back and airing in the US beginning next Monday. YipeeyaYAY!!! :)) I can’t wait to see what happens to my favorites Blair Bear (post dethronement and pregnancy scare) and Bad Boy Bass (will he and Nate be ex-BFFs for good?). Plus, I’m itching to find out who’s coming out of the closet (my life savings is on Eric!).

Oooh! C + B all matchy-matchy. :x How cute is that!

I don’t think they’ll ever reveal who Gossip Girl is, but to honor the show and its cleverly catty character, I’ve decided to answer some questions (slambook style!) taken from GG’s personal blog. See the profiles of your favorite UESiders here.

Lives with: parents Melchor and Agnes in SJ
Likes: Meeting stars, making lists, bursting into song for no reason, traveling, watching teen flicks, laughing out loud, capturing life through snapshots, haunting tunes
Dislikes: Broken cameras, high-pitched sounds, old bills or coins, burning my tongue while drinking something hot, people who think we’re close (but we’re really not!)
Best Friends: Blanche and Karen
Pet: Go-Go (mix of Japanese Spitz and Lhasa Apso)
Childhood Crushes: Robi Rosa (Menudo), Joe McIntyre (NKOTB)
Current Crush: Ed Westwick
Favorite Subject: Boys (haha!)
Favorite Word: Melancholy
Favorite Afterwork Activity: Playtime with my little nephew Jared
Favorite Drink: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s Chai Tea Latte
Favorite Food: Siao Long Pao
Favorite Video Game: Tetris
Favorite Reality Show: America’s Next Top Model
Favorite Funny Movie: She’s the Man
Gadget of Choice: Lomo cameras—Fisheye, Frogeye, Vivitar!
Ideal Vacation Destinations: New York, Greece, Europe
Current songs playing on iPod: “Always Be My Baby” by David Cook, “Almost Lover” by A Fine Frenzy
Current books on nightstand: The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella
Dream Job: Getting paid to see the world
Motto: “All we have are memories.”

Care to share some random stuff about yourself? Go ahead and leave a comment! ;)

XOXO!
Mimi
