The Jan-Feb ish rocks!

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

O. M. G. Surprised

I can't believe it's already the last day of the month. Tomorrow, it's February! Why is it that time seems to move at an alarmingly fast pace when you're having fun (and is agonizingly slooow when you're sad or bored)?

Anyhow, just because it's the end of the month, it doesn't mean you can't get a dose of your favorite Candy! You still have a whole month to grab a copy of the latest ish. :D

And if you're not yet convinced about why the Jan-Feb ish rocks, here are some of the things I loved while working on it:

1. Meeting Candy cover girl Cheska Ortega. She really is sugar, spice, and everything nice!

2. Eating at Banapple for the Candy Rap feature. Here are some of the delectable treats they offered us! (Visit them at 225 Katipunan Ave., Blue Ridge, Q.C.)

Not only do they have delectable cakes, they have the yummiest pancakes, sandwiches, pasta, and rice dishes too!

3. Working on the Love Firsts Special (turn to page 78 of your mag!). There's our trusty photographer Dakila and our models, Leiko and Candy Cutie Rice. Steph, Marla, and I were so kilig with this shot!

4. Raiding Dino and AJ’s rooms for the Wake-up call feature (it's on page 42!).

Here I am with Roch and Marla in Dino's cool pad, where he proudly displays his copies of Candy mag!

Here's Marla who tries to wake up a very disgruntled Dino. When he finally gets up, he eats a quick breakfast and even shows us his school! :)

Our next stop was AJ's house. Here he is being roused from sleep while Roch and I look on.

I ask him his thoughts about your love dilemmas which he gamely—and very wisely—answered. (Got more  Love Qs? E-mail askaj@candymag.com or deardino@candymag.com!) After that, we had our photo shoot—with his very cute little brother Gelo!

So, for those who haven't grabbed a copy yet, I hope this convinces you! Believe me, that's not even half of what's in the mag. We've got more fashion, beauty, celebrities, feature articles, and the prom supplement just for you!

For those who've already read it, tell us what you think! Loved it? Hated it? Spill! We're dying to know. ;)

xoxo,

Angel

Mia’s Cibo Night

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

If there’s one certainty in my life, it’s this: Whenever I get really, really hungry, I crave pizza. Late night at work closing an issue? I drag our Art Director Steph to Uncle John’s for some Four Cheese or Grilled Chicken. Busy day and on my way home? I stop by the Pizza Hut Take-out Counter for a couple of Hawaiian slices and hop back into my car. Forgot to eat lunch? A quick walk to Yellow Cab (It’s right beside my office. It’s fate.) and I’m a-okay. Not happy with my ulam at home? One call to Domino’s, Brooklyn, or Jugno’s and my world is happy again.

Recently, while on a power-shopping trip at the mall, I was feeling decidedly wiped out and in serious need of carbs. So I headed over to Cibo, and to my delight, found that their new pizzas were finally available. I asked about them months ago but they weren’t quite there yet (on the menu but not available).

While waiting for my pizza, I had their chips with mayo dip, and their frothy iced tea (I like theirs so much I usually have two!). I checked out their artsy, Gaudi-like interiors and decided I love their new Euro-cozy ambience. And then my pizza came and all my pretensions of being cultured flew out the window. Nothing like gobbling up a pizza with relish! Laughing It’s a big serving so I was pretty full. I had no room left for dessert (so out of character, I know), so I’m definitely coming back for more Cibo. Smile

frothy, frothy

Want some? Frothy-frothy always does it for me!

squash me, baby!

Lovin' their cozy, Euro-feel booths!

Favorite Videos

Monday, January 28th, 2008

One of my favorite things to do on weekends (and one of the easiest ways to waste time, hehe) is to search for music videos on YouTube. Several weeks ago, my friend asked me what my three favorite music videos are, and I didn’t have to think too hard—two videos immediately came to mind:

I’ve always loved Panic! At the Disco, although they can get very strange sometimes, and this video is no exception. “Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have…” has a line that goes let’s get these teen hearts beating faster, faster, and my theory is that the fish tanks on the character’s heads are a reference to that scene in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, when Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes first laid eyes on each other. I’m totally guessing, and I could be wrong, of course, but in any case, this video fascinates me because it’s sad and quirky without being too disturbing. (If you’re up for disturbing, check out Damien Rice’s “9 Crimes,” but don’t say I didn’t warn ya!)

“The Queen and I” is such a fun song (Mimi included it in her Blair-Chuck playlist), and this video completely cracks me up. I love the storybook format, the fact that there’s literally a queen, and bassist Eric Roberts, who’s looking mighty fine here! Haha.

I was stumped on what my third video should be. Don’t laugh, but I was torn between two boy band classics—BSB’s “As Long As You Love Me” (trivia, Brian Littrell met his wife while shooting this video) and N Sync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me” (the dancing dolls are hilarious). But last weekend, I finally found my answer:

Scouting for Girls, a rock band from London, writes catchy, straightforward tunes and has a really cute vocalist with a really sexy accent. Haha! “Elvis Ain’t Dead” is my current obsession, and I can watch the video over and over again. I love how it seems so silly and funny at first, but when you listen to the lyrics, you realize how Elvis actually stands for something or someone you want to keep holding on to, but decide to let go of in the end. Such a depressing thought masked by a happy melody. :(

So, those are my top three. Do let me in on yours! ;)

Big hugs,
Marla

Chemical Reaction

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Hi, Candy girls!

How was your week?

Mine has been one helluva roller-coaster ride (long story!), but things are finally getting back on track. Thank God! Anyway…

Marla and I had a chance to attend the press con of My Chemical Romance yesterday. We didn't expect much since we weren’t really fans, but we were blown away by their niceness—totally NOT what I expected from an angst-sounding rock band.

Empty chairs moments before the press con started.

The boys are finally here! That’s Ray, Gerard, Bob, Mikey, and Frank looking grim. Would you believe they describe themselves as boring?!

Apparently, guitarist Ray is a big LOST fan. Check out the numbers on his shirt. What’s funny is that the other guys didn’t even know what these numbers were, but Ray has been wearing this tee for months!

Bassist Mikey has got these wickedly piercing eyes and white skin. Kind of reminds me of a vampire. Marla says he can be Edward Cullen from Twilight.

Among all the boys, Marla and I liked Gerard (my pick) and Frank (her pick). Gerard reminds me of The Smashing Pumpkin’s Billy Corgan and Dirty Sexy Money’s Seth Gabel. Frank was totally adorable because he was smiling most of the time. Plus, he had this little smiley pin. Aww!

Marla and I were stumped about what to ask, but we were seriously considering this Q: “The songs from The Black Parade talk about death. Would you ever write about unicorn, rainbows, and butterflies?” Tee hee! In the end, Marla decided on asking them about their songwriting (which was a great question, but the first one would have elicited a stronger reaction, don’t you think?).

When we got back to the office, I received a package from MWAH! by Chic containing temporary hair spray, so I decided to spray some on my new ‘do. You likey? That’s how my hair would look if I were a rock star… or Nymphadora Tonks. Haha!

Have a happy and safe weekend, guys!

Mimi
