Meet the (Pie)Maker
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007
I now introduce you to another Candy team obsession: Pushing Daisies.
From pushingdaisiesinsider.com: "This quirky ABC drama focuses on Ned, a piemaker with a mysterious ability to help the dead come alive. Sounds cool, right? It is, but such a gift is not without its complications: if Ned touches this being a second time, he or she will die again. With no chance to be resurrected. Also, if he or she lives for more than 60 seconds, somebody else nearby will die. (The show dubs this “a random proximity thing.”) Ned tried to use this talent for good, as he helps a private investigator friend, along with his own childhood sweetheart, the once-dead Charlotte “Chuck” Charles. Got all that? Good. Now sit back and watch this series come to life."
There are so many reasons to love this series—visual appeal, hilarious dialogue, quirky characters, thought-provoking storyline. I know I'm hooked because of these signs:
1. "Chuck" is no longer just a guy's name for me, and "Ned" is no longer just associated with Ned Nickerson of Nancy Drew.
2. I now refer to pretty floral dresses as Chuck Dresses. (I love love love her gorgeous outfits on the show!)
3. A hug is no longer just a hug. It's an emotional Heimlich.
4. "I just thought my world would be a better place if you were in it." This line makes me smile every single time I remember it.
5. Plastic cling wrap now makes me giggle. Haha!
Watch it, watch it, watch it! It's strange and beautiful and witty and wonderful all at the same time. I promise you'll be hooked too.
Everything we do is a choice,
Marla

Mia’s Dog Days
Monday, October 22nd, 2007Have you met my teddy bear?
Her name's Kelly, but I call her Kelly Belly. She's my guy's chow chow and she just turned two! She hardly ever goes out (just walking from her house to the street corner is enough work for her—seriously!), so for her birthday, we thought it would be great to take her out for a night walk. She gets too hot during the day, so we figured an after-dinner thing was more her style.
We took her to Hobbes Universe where they have tons of doggie stuff and a Dog Bar for thirsty pups. She felt totally at home and settled in right away!
She didn't mind at all when strangers would come up to snap her pic or pet her. She was such a good girl the entire time, and had the biggest smile on her face on our way home. See?
I'm actually not used to hanging out with a laid-back, surfer-dude type doggie. She's so different from my high-strung puppy! And speaking of Mick, here are pics of another recent dog day of mine. We joined the annual Great Dog Dash organized by PAWS.
I had to register him at the front desk, where they measure every contestant's height so they can categorize him properly. Mick's an Elf! He competed against mostly dachshunds and fellow shih tzus. Here's a shot of the chaotic race track.
And here's my favorite contestant, looking cute with his number tag!
He wore his lucky green ribbon, but sadly, we didn't win anything (he didn't even want to run 'cause he couldn't see me at the finish line!!! he just wanted out of that start box!). Am hoping he and Bugsy will have better luck next year!

Where is the LOVE?
Thursday, October 18th, 2007Apparently, it’s on HBO.
A few weeks ago, Marla, Angel, and I headed to My Cinema at Greenbelt to attend the special screening of HBO’s newest original series, Big Love. My sister and I were big fans of Sex and the City (do you know they’re already filming the movie? Yay!) and the freaky Carnivale (too bad it got axed), so I was intrigued by what the cable channel would offer next.
Before the show started, I: 1) bumped into a good friend; 2) met HBO’s PR Manager Karen Lai who excitedly talked about the new show; 3) ate a sumptuous lunch and drool-worthy green tea dessert; and 4) got cozy with Marla and Angel with our huge huggable heart pillows.
After viewing the first two episodes, I was intrigued. Turns out, there’s more to Big Love than meets the eye. There’s Bill, a seemingly normal businessman who has—get this—three wives! Add a compelling script, equals amounts of drama and tension, a well-known producer (Tom Hanks!), and topnotch actors such as Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, and Ginnifer Goodwin to the mix, and what have you got?
Monday nights filled with a different kind of love.
Intrigued? Watch the premiere episode with an open mind and heart on October 22, 10 pm, only on HBO.
Mimi
PS: Guess who turns 20 today? Hottie Zac Efron! Wherever you are, Zacy boy, the Candy girls and I love you from the bottom of our big hearts! You're definitely the "Ladies' Choice."
