Collections
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007Hey, Candy girls!
When I was in grade school, I used to collect stamps. I'd write my friend who had just moved to New Zealand tons of letters so I could collect the stamps that would be on her letters. My mom bought me a stamp album and it came with a set of stamps. I was obsessed for it for a while, but now that album is nowhere near halfway full.

At present, I seem to be acquiring a lot of shoes, sneakers in particular. It all started when my kuya introduced me to Nike Dunks. I remember we were spending our Sunday with the family in Shangri-la and shoes were on sale. I went home happily carrying a bag with first pair of Dunks.
After that, my brother would buy shoes for me or I'd get a pair for myself. I now have 6 pairs and I'm looking to add some more to my growing collection. Some of the gifts donated to my collection are these awesome lime green Dunks (limited edition!) and purple ones with blue laces that my brother got for my birthday (it's still a week away!).

Now I haven't started collecting yet, but after attending the big lomo exhibit at the Team Manila office, I definitely want to start a collection of lomos (pictures, if not cameras haha). I've posted about my Supersampler before and I think it's about time I get another camera! Here is my lomo wishlist:

I hope to add more pictures to my makeshift lomowall here in my cube. Here's a funny shot that came out of my last roll:

Amazing Inventions
Tuesday, October 30th, 2007Last Friday, Macy and I attended the opening of whizIP: Young Inventors’ Exhibit. It showcased the robotic inventions of students from different schools around the Philippines. They were very impressive! Here, let me show you…
Meet IR01!
AMA Education System’s IR01, or Interactive Robot 01, is a five-foot humanoid which accomplishes what is said to be the hardest thing to make a robot do: walk on two legs. The life-size robot can answer basic questions through the help of a sound sensor. Pretty cool, huh?
Fort Bonifacio High School’s Jumong Archer practices the popular precision sport. Inspired by a TV series of the same name, it is programmed to shoot an arrow at a target from a set distance.
Makati Science High School’s Robo Gymnast performs swing moves on still rings, an artistic gymnastics apparatus.
Novaliches High School’s Janitor Robot can sweep the floor with a miniature broom and brush. It is made of scrap material such as coconut shell, plastic pot and aluminum scraps.
Other inventions featured include a robotic kalesa or horse-drawn carriage, a robot that can write, and a robotic hand that can perform sign language. Amazing!
If you want to get inspired and see these amazing inventions in action, drop by the Innovation Area of the Intellectual Property Office Building, 351 Sen. Gil Puyat ave., Makati City.
Hmm… now why couldn’t I come up with such interesting projects back when I was in high school? If you could create your own invention, what would it be? Let me know. Good luck!

New Dawn Breaking
Friday, October 26th, 2007Hi, Candy girls!
Last Wednesday, Macy, Marla, Roch and I went to Music Museum to watch the three remaining members of Rivermaya find a new frontman. Before going up the venue, we spotted the sign for the show. We heard that our old Katie’s Diary illustrator (Paolo Lim) did the artwork. What do you think?
The entrance of the finalists was haunting. They sang some kind of round song that spoke of never giving up as the were walking towards the stage. The audience screamed when the two remaining finalists, Hans and Jayson, sang their parts.
Later on, the boys were given the chance to sing Rivermaya songs as well as their own creations. Honestly, I thought their originals sounded like songs you could hear in TV ads. I liked Hans’s voice better, but Jayson had more stage presence (he looks like Gerald Anderson, don’t you think?).
Here are the judges assessing the boys’ performances. Lizza Nakpil (hidden from my camera’s view), Louie Talan, and Francis Brew. The boys from the band are seated right behind them, watching their every move.
Aside from watching the two finalists battle it out onstage, popular Pinoy bands such as Imago (see Aia), Sandwich, Stonefree, Sponge Cola (see Yael), and Callalily came to support Rivermaya. Each band even got to sing their favorite Rivermaya track!
Now the question is, who won this competition: Hans or Jayson? I’ll never tell. But you can watch the two-hour finale on TV this Sunday, 9:15 pm, on Studio 23…
I can't wait to see the new Rivermaya perform live…
Mimi
PS: The Candy girls and I want to greet stariray Candice the biggest, best-est, happiest birthday ever! Wishing love and happiness all year round because you deserve it.

The City of Smiles
Thursday, October 25th, 2007Hey, guys!
Last weekend, my friends and I flew to Bacolod for a short vacay. Here are some reasons why I think you should go too!
1. As my title states, it's the City of Smiles—and who wouldn't be happy in a place where every person you meet will greet you with a grin?
2. It's the home of the original Chicken Inasal.
3. You'll get to climb (or at least have a splendid view) of Mt. Kanlaon, the most active volcano in the Philippines.
4. You can relax your muscles and take a dip in the hot springs of Mambukal Resort.
5. You can dance to the beat of your own drum with the Brazilian-inspired music of the Mangkas Drumbeaters.
6. You can take part in the fun and colorful Masskara Festival!
7. You can take home the yummiest pasalubong from BongBong's (Napoleones and Butterscotch are love!) and scrumptious cakes from Cafe Bob's!
So much to see, so little time… I'll definitely be back! What are your favorite cities and provinces? Let me know why you love 'em so I can pop by for a visit!
From sunrise to sunset,
Angel
