Whether you're in high school or in college, with all the papers that you have to write, readings that you have to know by heart, and let's not forget the Friday night outs that help you stay sane in school, late nights are inevitable and so are dark circles. While school season can be pretty demanding, at least you have summers and breaks to catch up on sleep. But how long does it really take for dark circles to go away once you start getting enough ZZZs? Dermatologist Rhoda Espino gives us the lowdown.

Q: How long will it take for my dark circles to go away once I start getting enough sleep?

Dr. Rhoda: There are several factors that cause dark circles around the eyes—from the thinness of the skin around it making it extra vulnerable, lifestyle, stress, and of course sleep deprivation. When it comes to fixing puffiness and dark circles under the eyes, there is really no specific timeframe as to when it will go away once you start getting enough sleep because lifestyle and the health status of the person are still important factors to consider. As dermatologists, we advise the patient to go back to their normal sleeping pattern with at least eight hours of sleep to bring back the healthy, natural glow of their skin.

Dr. Rhoda B Espino graduated from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Medicine and received her training in dermatology in New South Wales Australia for Cosmetic and Aesthetic Medicine followed by Fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology in the Philippine Academy of Aesthetic and Age Management Medicine and the Philippine Academy of Medical Specialists. She is currently a member of the Philippine Society in Anti-Obesity, a board director of PAAMMI, and is the CEO of EliteAsia Aesthetics Center.
