Divergent: 15 Reasons Why the Movie Was Better Than the Book

You know, aside from Theo James as Four.

A wee bit late to the Divergent party, I read all three books in two days over the Christmas break. I remember thinking that the series would look great on the big screen because it's got a ton of action sequences and kilig moments, and not enough character and plot development to leave on the cutting room floor. And what do you know—the movie lives up to my expectations. P.S. Minor spoiler alert!

  1. Watching the movie was like riding a two-hour roller coaster ride, and I didn't even see it in 3D. Thought Tris ziplining was just going to be a fun, relaxing ride? Um, no.

  2. Shailene Woodley brings so much depth to her character, Tris. She doesn't even need to speak—her eyes speak a thousand words.

  3. The brutal Dauntless training gets much-deserved screen time...

  4. Although some things don't, such as Peter stabbing the best initiate in the eye, the initiates who die jumping out of a train onto a rooftop on day one, and the sexual assault on Tris. But maybe the last one is responsible editing, as Vulture says.

  5. They changed the ending to something much more exciting; think the fake battle in Breaking Dawn Part 2—only this wasn't the least bit pretend.

  6. Will (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) is much cuter than he seems to be in the books. (Which reminds me: I hope they still mention his relationship with Cristina in the sequel. Tris killing her friend who's also her BFF's boyfriend is something that haunts her all throughout the books.)

  7. Shailene's boys are all here, starting with Miles Teller as Peter the douche. From almost couple in The Spectacular Now, they're the worst of enemies in Divergent.

  8. Ansel Elgort and Shailene will be playing star-crossed lovers in The Fault in Our Stars, but they're siblings here. Still, I couldn't help but squeal inside every time they had a scene together.
